Fiskars Splitting Lineup Confusion
Fiskars produces several splitting axes under different names, causing confusion among buyers. The X27 (36"), Super Splitting Axe (SSA, 36" with different grip), and X25 (28") are the most common. Here's how they compare.
Model Comparison
| Model | Length | Grip | Head Weight | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X27 | 36" | Standard FiberComp | 4.6 lbs | Taller users, maximum leverage |
| Super Splitting Axe | 36" | Rubber overmold grip | 4.5 lbs | Users preferring softer grip |
| X25 | 28" | Standard FiberComp | 4.5 lbs | Shorter users, easier control |
Grip Differences
The standard FiberComp handle on the X27 and X25 is a hard fiberglass-reinforced polymer with mild texture. The Super Splitting Axe adds a rubber overmold grip for better comfort and slip resistance. In wet or cold conditions, the SSA's rubber grip maintains traction better, while the FiberComp may feel slick. However, the rubber can wear faster over years of heavy use.
Length Considerations
The 36" X27 provides maximum leverage for splitting larger rounds. Taller users (6'+) can swing it comfortably with a full arc, generating tremendous splitting force. The 28" X25 is easier to control for shorter users or those working in tight spaces. It also reduces the risk of overstriking the handle since the swing arc is shorter.
For most users splitting firewood at home, the X27 offers the best power-to-control ratio at 36". The Super Splitting Axe is worth the small premium if you value grip comfort. The X25 excels for shorter users or those who split wood primarily for camping rather than home heating. All share excellent build quality and the same effective splitting geometry.
