Gerber Knives: Made in USA or Overseas?
Gerber's story is complicated. Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1939 by Pete Gerber, Gerber is now owned by Finnish company Fiskars and manufactures in both the USA and overseas. The brand's American heritage remains an important part of its identity, but the reality of modern manufacturing means their product line spans multiple countries.
Gerber occupies an interesting position in the knife market โ respected enough to be carried by military and outdoor professionals, yet accessible enough for casual buyers. Understanding where different Gerber knives are made helps explain the quality variations across their lineup.
Made in USA Models
Some Gerber models are still made in Portland, Oregon:
- Gerber Strongarm (USA-made version) โ their most popular tactical folder
- Gerber Bailout โ compact EDC folder
- Certain custom and limited-edition models
- Some of their hunting and military line, including the LMF II Infantry (in cooperation with Bear Grylls)
The USA-made Gerbers tend to have higher quality standards, tighter tolerances, and better fit and finish. They cost more but deliver on the promise of American craftsmanship.
Overseas-Made Models
The majority of Gerber's consumer line is made in China:
- Most budget multitools and everyday folders
- Bear Grylls survival series
- Dime and Suspension multitools
- Many of their kitchen knife lines
- Freeman and other budget utility knives
China manufacturing allows Gerber to offer affordable products to mainstream consumers. The quality on these products ranges from surprisingly good to disappointing, depending on the specific model and production run.
How to Tell Where Your Gerber Is Made
Check the blade or packaging โ it will say "Made in USA" or "Made in China." Unfortunately, Gerber is not always clear about origin on their marketing materials, so physical inspection is the most reliable method. Look for "Portland, Oregon" markings on American-made models.
Some Gerber products use a global manufacturing approach where components are made in different countries and assembled elsewhere. A knife might have a Chinese-made blade but an American-assembled final product.
Gerber's Quality Spectrum
USA-Made Gerbers
- Tighter tolerances and better fit/finish
- Higher-grade steel selections
- Better lock engagement and smoother action
- Priced at $80-$200 for folders
Overseas Gerbers
- Adequate quality for casual use
- Budget-friendly steels (often 8Cr13MoV or similar)
- Inconsistent fit and finish between units
- Priced at $15-$50
Multitools
Gerber multitools have a mixed reputation. The higher-end models (Center Drive, Suspension) are well-regarded for innovation and build quality, while budget models are considered adequate but unremarkable. Their legendary MP400/MP600 Multi-Plier is an American-made icon that has been a military standard for decades.
The Fiskars Acquisition and Its Impact
When Fiskars (a Finnish company) acquired Gerber in 2010, there were concerns about quality deterioration. The truth has been mixed โ some product lines have improved with better design and engineering resources, while others have seen cost-cutting measures. The Fiskars acquisition brought financial stability and international distribution but also led to some production moving overseas for cost optimization.
Check the label. USA-made Gerbers are solid quality and represent genuine American manufacturing. Overseas models are hit-or-miss โ they work fine for light use but don't hold up like American-manufactured blades. If origin matters, look specifically for "Made in USA" on the blade. Gerber's strongest offerings (like the USA-made Strongarm and Bailout) are competitive with other premium American makers.
