All Bread Knives Are Serrated โ But Not All Serrated Knives Are Bread Knives
Serrated knives exist on a spectrum: tiny serrated steak knives (4โ5 inches), utility serrated knives (5โ7 inches), and full bread knives (9โ12 inches). Each size is optimized for different tasks.
Size and What It Means
| Blade Length | Best Use |
|---|---|
| 4โ5 inches (steak knife) | Cutting cooked meat at table |
| 5โ7 inches (utility serrated) | Tomatoes, citrus, rolls |
| 9โ10 inches (bread knife) | Standard sandwich loaves, batards |
| 10โ12 inches (long bread knife) | Boules, melons, cakes |
Why Long Bread Knives Are Better
The longer the blade, the less you need to saw โ ideally, a single pull stroke slices all the way through. Short blades require multiple sawing strokes which compress and tear the crumb. Professional bakers almost universally use 10โ12 inch bread knives for exactly this reason.
A 10-inch bread knife is the right choice for most home kitchens โ long enough to slice in one stroke, versatile enough for bread, cakes, melons, and large tomatoes. Don't buy a 9-inch when a 10-inch is the same price.
